The Salinas del Carmen are located on the east coast of Fuerteventura. Formerly known as the Salinas de Hondurilla, they were created in the 18th century. They are the first salt flats in Fuerteventura to come into operation and the only ones on the island that are still active. In 1910, Manuel Velázquez Cabrera (Tiscamanita 1863 - Madrid 1916) modernized the salt flats and configured them as we know them today. In 1995, the City Council of Fuerteventura launched a rehabilitation plan and due to their great historical, ethnographic, ecological and environmental value, they were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002. From its origin to the present day, the Salt of Fuerteventura Salinas del Carmen is still made with the same traditional artisanal methods.
