At altitudes of 5000 meters high, with temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius, it is hard to believe that anything up there can survive. But it does exist. On one of the highest plateaus in the world - in the ice deserts of Ladakh in India - you will find the nomads of Changtang and an extremely hardy and rare breed of goats: the Changtangi. The altitude and extreme cold in the relentless mountainous region, stimulate the undercoat growth of this goat. Its coat fiber is eight times warmer than sheep's wool and only 12 microns wide, making it about 5 times finer than human hair. A scarf made of this coat is particularly warm and can last for decades. Despite the thinness of the fiber, it is incredibly strong. It is also super soft and known as the luxurious Pashmina.
