The largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England, the Cotswolds has everything a walker could possibly want: rolling hills, babbling brooks, and wide open meadows. Not to mention the area’s idyllic towns and villages, world-famous for their golden-coloured Cotswold stone. Tucked on the northwest edge of Wiltshire, the village of Castle Combe is about as Cotswoldy as it gets. Named after a castle that once stood in the area, Castle Combe sits on the banks of the leisurely Bybrook River, which rises in South Gloucestershire and flows southwards into the Bristol Avon. No new houses have been built here since about 1600, so walking through the village feels like going back in time. No wonder it was voted England’s prettiest village back in 1961!
