Our family business is located in the middle of the beautiful Lungau mountains. Ferner wool production was founded back in 1906 by my great-grandfather Josef Ferner. When my grandpa Matthias Ferner returned from Russian captivity of war in 1947, he continued the clutter, which only produced fleece. In 1954, the carding was expanded to include a spinning mill. Until my dad Matthias Ferner senior took over the company in 1976, only wool from local farms was processed. In 1977, my dad expanded the company and concentrated on selling hand and machine knitting yarns. The saying goes: “You don't know what you have at home until you go far away.” That's how I was drawn out of Lungau and out into the world at a young age. I first worked in Ibiza and then travelled across Austria as a bartender. After a few seasons in hospitality, I longed for my home. I packed my bags and went back to Lungau and from then on worked for my father's family business.
