BB Naturals is a Black-owned company, named after the Bourn Brook in the West Midlands, UK. Based in Birmingham, BB Naturals was founded by Dr. Kadian Pow. She prides herself on making solutions-based products that maintain the moisture balance of Afro-textured, curly hair and sensitive skin. The products are inspired by the real needs of her customers. Behind each product is based on problem-solving for a family member, a friend, or herself. She first began working on a conditioner (Avocado Smoothie) for herself in 2014 whilst working 3 jobs, including teaching at University of Birmingham and attending part time as a PhD student. This intense mental exertion was what pushed her to pursue more creative outlets as a way to switch off and find stillness. It’s partly for this reason that Kadian thinks of BBN as a wellness project rather than simply another beauty brand. What started as a wellness activity for herself became a way to pass down that sense of joy and caretaking through the products she makes. Kadian says, “there’s a lot of pain and strife and sorrow in the world and if what I do could be a small part of relieving that after a long day, that’s a great legacy to leave in the world - it makes me feel really purposeful.”
