"I don't read, Miss. I'm Black." Those are the words that started all of this. One of my students said it to me during my first year teaching, and at that moment I accepted the challenge to change their minds. Hi! I'm Nia-Tayler Clark. I'm a mother, an educator, and I believe in the power of literacy. I started BLACKLIT because many students sit in a classroom and are forced to read, acknowledge, and celebrate everyone’s story but their own. I started BLACKLIT because Black authors, readers, and writers have a story worth listening to. I started BLACKLIT a reminder that we are not just Black. We are BLACK, LITERATE, EMPOWERED, AND STRONG. BLACKLIT’s mission is to eliminate the literacy gap, lack of positive representation and the barrier to access that currently plagues the Black community. Don't just get lit...GET BLACKLIT!
