Many of Joon’s ingredients were inspired by founders', Shiva and Kayvon Tavakoli, Persian roots. The idea behind Joon came from early summers spent eating from their grandmother’s kitchen table, while their grandfather ran a spice trading company. The mixture of smells and flavors inspired bright plant-based infusions in the new line with products featuring saffron, rose, fig, pomegranate and other naturally inspired pairings. What resulted was a combination of kitchen and science, and ancient to cutting edge. Coming from a haircare background, Shiva and Kayvon Tavakoli spent their entire lives in the salon haircare world. Their father came to the US when he was 17 years old and after moving to Houston, built a successful salon empire and haircare laboratory. Shiva and Kayvon have worked in the family business for years. The siblings want to embody the diversity of people with their new line. Shiva states, “Joon is a haircare line inspired by my Persian grandparents, but it’s more than just about being another brand. It’s really an immigrant story, an underdog story about celebrating your history -- whether you come from Mexico or the Midwest. It’s about celebrating your story and pushing past boundaries, hardships, borders, or stereotypes.” “We tried to create a haircare line that marries ancient tradition with modern science. Hola Coco was founded in March 2017 by Sophie Leah and Gareth Thompson, a normal couple from Manchester working full time jobs alongside starting the business. Sophie had been taking Roaccutane, a strong medication for acne that left her hair in terrible condition. She tried everything to fix it and eventually resorted to making her own concoction at home using coconut oil and other cupboard ingredients. They then found a manufacturer to make their nourishing Coconut Oil Hair Mask and that is where Hola Coco began. Sophie's transformation from using the hair mask on a regular basis was incredible and it soon became apparent their customers were having similar results. After years of straightening my hair, due to the pressure to conform and hating what I thought it looked like naturally, in 2012 I decided to ditch the straighteners, and begin the journey to embrace my natural hair. My natural hair journey, involved experimentation with a range of products, each failing to produce the results I desired. Olew was born out of the frustration at the lack of natural hair care products available for my mane. Combined with my extensive research into the harmful chemicals and preservatives that are a mainstay of many of the products available on the market. Curly hair needs special love I grew to understand that curly hair always needs special love and attention, so I’ve made sure that all of Olew products are packed with natural, hydrating, and nourishing ingredients to give you the happy curls you deserve. Originally made from my kitchen in East London, the Olew product range is still proudly made and packaged in the UK, and always tested on my own curls. Embracing our roots To reflect this journey of self-discovery which had led me to not only fall back in love with my natural hair but also myself.
