Angry Little Girls began as an (un)animated video made while Lela was a college student. It featured only the Angry Little Asian Girl and sat in a drawer for years. One day, friends watched it and actually laughed. Encouraged by the positive reaction, Lela added more episodes and began selling t-shirts from the trunk of her car. Encouraged by the response to the shirts from both Asian and non-Asian women, she taught herself to draw comics, added other Angry Little Girls, and self-published weeklies on her website. Books, bags, and other products became wildly popular, selling in malls across America. However, motherhood and the recession made her scale down. Her kids are now grown and she has recently relaunched her brand as a smaller operation that sells at local events, museum shops, and smaller mom-and-pop stores.
