My name is Samantha, and I'm the founder and creator of Utando Designs. I offer a full bespoke service, designing and making cushions by hand according to your unique requirements. The name of my business comes from the word "Uthando" which means "Love" in the Zulu language. Utando was created in honour of my father and grandfather, who were going to set up a business together exporting African art and jewellery, and they were going to call their business Uthando. They sadly never got the chance to do this as they have both since passed away, so I thought it was only right to use the name in their memory. I grew up with my mother sewing literally all my clothes and I'm pretty sure that myself, my Mum and my Barbie doll had the same purple and black polka dot dress once! My Grandfather used to make his own patterns and had a fabric business in Brick Lane, London before moving to South Africa to follow through with his textile business and sewing shop. It is in my blood and over time I picked up a bit of sewing. All my cushions are made with love and care using high-quality fabric including African Ankara and velvet fabrics.
