ABOUT MARABU Marabú charcoal from Cuba Marabu charcoal is traditionally made from the branches and trunk of the Marabú bushes, a wild and invasive species. "El marabú" was imported from Africa to the Caribbean in the 19th century. It is a plant that develops into shrubs and trees up to 10m in height. Due to the crisis in Cuba in the 1990s, many agricultural areas were left uncultivated, allowing 'el marabú' to slowly spread over large parts of the former agricultural areas. El Marabu is listed in the 'Global Invasive Species Database' where all named plants must be cut down if they start growing in places other than their natural range.
