RissaLaRue Co. was born out of the desire to fill a gap in the BIPOC representation in the home décor market, and a work environment aligned with my values, leading to the founding of a Black woman-owned brand that inspires BIPOC customers to create a space they can thrive in. My transition from being a textile designer to becoming the founder of RissaLaRue Co. was driven by the motivation to create with my hands, witnessing the lack of representation in the home décor market, and yearning for a work environment that aligned with my values. In 2019, I worked as a textile designer, specializing in designing mattress ticking for national brands. I traveled to different home décor markets, I noticed there was an overwhelming absence of Black-owned home décor brands, despite the abundance of African-inspired or African-sourced artifacts. The market was clearly missing a connection and representation. Since its inception, one of the most gratifying achievements was securing my first wholesale retail order at the renowned shopSCAD store. In addition to the shopSCAD order, I successfully secured a Spoonflower Small Business Grant, which proved instrumental in expanding my product offerings. This expansion allowed me to amplify further the representation of BIPOC women in interior design and home décor, providing them with an avenue to express their unique styles and experiences within their living spaces. I am looking forward to future collaborations for RissaLaRue Co.!
