Growing up in a Mexican family, natural remedies is something that is taught to every member of the family. I can remember from a young age learning that ‘yerba buena’ or mint leaves cured stomach aches and indigestion, mint leaves coated with baking soda heal ‘postemillas’ (canker sores), chamomile tea to help me sleep, and information on medicinal herbs; information that’s passed down from generation to generation, slowly building a repertoire of preventive health concoctions and healing methods. It’s almost impossible to grow up Mexican without ingrained knowledge of natural healing. It must be fate that I majored in anthropology and focused on medicine and later on decided to study public health. I learned that culture and healing go hand-in-hand, and this served as a framework and inspiration to create Urban Botanika; culture and healing in contemporary times. Urban Botanika is a story about preventive health and healing. Prevention is a ritual that starts with that very first sip of your favorite drink in the early hours of the morning, setting the intention for the day - “Today I will be healthy, today I will care for myself.” Urban Botanika’s herbal blends combine the most essential superfoods and adaptogenic plants and originality through handcrafting.
