Current Location Press specializes in letterpress and block printed work featuring natural landscapes and native plants as fine art prints, stationery, and tea towels. While Current Location Press originally began in 2013 during a move to Bangkok, the look of the work changed drastically when Raychel Steinbach, owner and printer, relocated again (thus, the name Current Location!) to Chicago and started creating work based off the various State Parks throughout Illinois. What started as fine art prints only quickly branched out to include stationery, pocket notebooks, stickers, tea towels, cloth napkins, and eye meditation pillows. The textiles also include a range of small-batch natural dyes. Current Location Press is rooted in sustainability; by using low-VOC materials, paper produced in the Midwest with hydropower, and reusing or composting all waste material, Current Location Press is dedicated to taking care of the beautiful environment our work is based upon. By embracing traditional methods of letterpress printing’s movable type, Raychel fully embraces a process that allows the same pieces of wood or metal type to be used over and over again. The State Park Prints are created by arranging small rectangular scraps from the wood type manufacturing process as if they were pieces of traditional type. Think of precisely finished tiny wood shims that are arranged amongst hundreds of pieces of metal keeping them in place. This creates the abstract color layers behind the car
