“Long Italian tradition lies behind high-quality production made in Ethiopia”. AFAR is a brand of Village Industry, a textile factory with unique capacity to process fabrics and leather based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its story builds on four generations of textile production knowledge and starts in Italy in 1878. The mother company – Figli di Michelangelo Calamai – was the first to adopt mechanical spinning technology with water turbines in Italy. Using recycled fibers from rugs and disposed garments. We are passionate about using good natural materials as they ensure comfort, durability, and aesthetics. Our cotton mostly comes from small farms in central Ethiopia where it has been grown for centuries using traditional techniques, like natural fertilizers. Natural and traditional with little impact on the amazing land. Ethiopia is home to the Zebu cow, the ancestor of all bovines. Their leather is similar to a wild animal’s skin, carrying memories of acacia thorns, encounters with predators, and farm work. The leather is a by-product as Zebu cows are not raised for skin or meat, but work and live out their lives roaming beautiful Ethiopian landscapes. The same happens with the horn accessories. The animal’s 7 different types and their horns vary in shape and color, with most beautifully multicolored with shades ranging from white to amber to black.
