Derk was the first to take the initiative “For Greens in Grey” by rolling seed bombs in his shared kitchen and distributing them around him. This was not only fun, but also immediately successful. Hamburg is still more urban jungle than rainforest, but small, colorful islands emerged and so many dreary side streets suddenly looked much friendlier. Derk was thrilled and after Jan and I visited him that summer, we were too. After rolling and distributing seed bombs for some time, more and more people started asking if they couldn't have them. Nobody seemed to enjoy rolling except us, just throwing and watching them grow later. “What the heck,” we thought, “we'll just do a few more and give them away.” This setting quickly reflected in empty wallets and an acute shortage of time. So we started taking money for the seed bombs. In 2011, as the city gardeners, we started selling the seed bombs at Dawanda (now Etsy) and since 2012 we have been running our own shop, www.diestagärtner.de (now also: www.city-gardener.com). We were at the first trade fairs in mid-2013 and started selling our products in small shops. Today we and many employees work full-time for the city gardener and we are happy about it every day.Read their story
