The Bilum & Bilas story starts with purpose and the celebration of Papua New Guinea's diverse culture and beauty. A ‘bilum’ is an iconic string bag handwoven by women, holding deep cultural and emotional significance. ‘Bilas’ means decoration and is used throughout Papua New Guinea to express identity. Many women in Papua New Guinea try to support their families by selling their traditional handcrafted bilums, but sales are limited, making it hard to earn enough to survive. Bilum & Bilas create contemporary adornments inspired by the beauty and essence of the bilum, honouring ancient weaving techniques and natural fibres. Our studio in Port Moresby provides our treasured artisans a safe and secure space to create, collaborate and celebrate their traditional skills. Each intricate Bilum & Bilas piece is lovingly handcrafted and embodies the spirit and cultural heritage of its maker, whilst empowering her to support her family.
