I taught myself to sew when I was 14 by taking apart vintage clothing and putting it back together again in Frankenstein type experiments - I had a very eccentric wardrobe back then! This was the start of my love of vintage and the start of my history of making reproduction/vintage inspired clothing that is wearable and comfortable. My business was born shortly after my first daughter was born. She inspired me to make some child's dresses and baby items and start selling at craft fairs where she joined me from 3 months old. The children's clothes soon expanded into adult clothing with a vintage feel and my business really started to take off. I started to get commissions to make bridesmaids dresses and started to sell to trade too. It all still feels like a bit of a whirlwind as there is always so much still to do (especially when you only get to work when your children sleep). I am looking forward to the future of Aye Aye and all the interesting opportunities that present themselves to you when you run your own business!

Everything is then lovingly made to order from our little studio in Edinburgh in small batches. In 2009 Shane & Breezy McGlynn were surfing in the west of Ireland when they spotted some curious creatures in a remote field overlooking the beach. On closer inspection they discovered a herd of alpacas, leading to a life changing adventure. What we learnt about alpacas and their incredible fleece led to the establishment of Simple Things. We are small independent company that has been trading since 2001; during this time we have forged strong trading relationships with producer groups located in Nepal and India. Every item we sell is handcrafted by our talented artisans, using traditional weaving, knitting or wet felting techniques. We have small production runs to eliminate as much waste material, where possible we also recycle the materials into other products. Therefore reducing our impact to the environment as much as possible. We work with small family run businesses or fair trade cooperatives, that are creating secure employment in an area with little opportunity, especially for women. Every product purchased supports our artisans, enabling them to live independently with access to safe, discrimination free work with a fair rate of pay.

Studio Hop goes all the way back to 2005 when founders Sam & Kikiyo took the plunge and started a market stall in Spitalfields, London on a wing and a prayer. Our nights were spent designing, creating and making handmade jewellery whilst our days involved persuading gentle city-folk and the odd tourist to purchase our creations. Fast forward a few years, and after oodles of hustling and hard work, we had opened shops in Camden Lock, Portobello Road, Gabriel’s Wharf and Hay’s Galleria – all fantastic London locations with history, charm and character. We took to the road and exhibited at trade shows around the country taking on stockists from Truro to Tasmania convincing shop owners along the way that their premises really weren’t complete without our latest range. Studio Hop moved to our current studio in Brockley, (the sunniest part of South East London) in 2016. We have a small warehouse downstairs for stock picking (quickly, because it’s always, always cold) then a studio on the first floor for design work, photography and the personalisation of all our pieces. As everything is prepared by our fantastic team under the one roof we can usually get orders despatched on the same day. Customer service has been at the heart of what we do since we first set up shop in 2005 and whether we see you in person or not, whether a retail or trade customer, we see no reason to change things now!
