We grew up in the rug business, so it seemed second nature to us to pursue our family’s passion together and create ABANI" WHAT WE DO We know that a nice rug pulls a whole room together, brings warmth underfoot and adds a homey, welcoming touch to any space. We also know that quality rugs are hard to come by at good prices. The market is flooded with rugs that are either too low-quality to last or too expensive for the average budget. So we decided to produce affordable and ethically sourced rugs all the while maintaining a standard in quality. We set about to reduce our costs in order to pass the savings your way.

Storytelling and weaving both have something in common: they are etymologically bound. We have text and textile from tek, because to weave, to write, to tell a story — are all the same things. It is a language we heavily rely on at Rugs Boutique. All of our products are handmade to the last detail using traditional, sustainable methods and materials. Each rug goes through an intimate process, endless tensile adjustments and takes about 6 weeks to make. This project has been made possible through the various contributions of women in my life. I run the studio alongside my mother and grandmother from our very own tiny workshop in India. We directly collaborate with women weavers from our community and pay them 2x more than the standard wage. They have full independence and work under the same roof as us. We are also getting around to setting up individual funds for the weaver community in Rajasthan, which allows them full autonomy of their decisions and future. In 1995, in search of some adventure, founder Sam Brummitt flew to Kathmandu, Nepal with a round-the-world ticket. After an inspirational trek to Mount Everest base camp, followed by 6 months circumnavigating the Indian Subcontinent on re-conditioned ex Indian Army Enfield Bullets and sleeping under the stars at the side of the road, the idea for the business slowly developed. Fuelled by a conversation one day in Rajasthan with the owner of a small textile business and now lifelong friend and a key supplier, Ganpat suggested Sam came back home and started a business. Starting a business meant earning a living while putting something back into such a beautiful and wonderful part of the world and that’s exactly what happened. Namaste, translated as ‘I greet the spirit within you’ was founded in 1997. Our Passions - We are dedicated to sourcing beautiful fairly traded products from the far corners of the world, embracing traditional artisan skills. Karen Riddick is the founder of Second Nature Online, an ethical company based in Dumfries, Scotland. The company specialises in fabulous, eco-friendly soft furnishings which are made from recycled and sustainable materials. Karen started the business in her spare room with the sale of a single Fair Trade rug, but she now has a registered brand and a team of 6 staff who work out of an old church and a large warehouse. Karen's passion for ethical products stems from a long academic and working career in the field of recycling and environmental policy. The founding of Second Nature Online has been a dream come true because it has allowed the company to put its values into practice. There is close collaboration between Karen and her small team of producers in India. Together, they work on designs, materials and colour schemes. Second Nature Online is proud to be a certified GoodWeave importer and retailer which means that everyone in the network adheres to strict guidelines and standards which prevent the practice of child and bonded labour. So far, it’s been a blast - and incredibly hard work, but there have been some brilliant proud moments. One of Karen's favourite is the appearance of one of their rugs on Dr Who - sitting under the Tardis in Series 10! The journey continues but its a shared one with you! Now, mother to Yug and dog-mom to Yogi, Homesoul was my first born ! Homesoul began with the love of kantha throws and scarves . An engineering degree did not stop me from pursuing my passion for textiles so I studied Fashion Merchandising to help me understand the trade better. Ever since, I have been collecting beautiful textiles from the Indian subcontinent. The journey began at Old Spitalfields market in 2012 and has been on ever since. I work with artisans and small businesses in India. My products have been stocked my various stores and museums in UK - the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and Urban Outfitters in the US.
