The colourful and unique designs of Pretty Pink Eco-Jewellery come from a material that is neither a vegetable nor ivory, but you wouldn't know it by its name. Vegetable Ivory, or Tagua, is the dried seed from a large, fruited palm tree that is native to Brazil and the tropical rainforests of South America. It can take forty years for these trees to produce their fruit, making the seeds inside them all the more precious. Each fruit contains between four and nine seeds ranging from the size of an olive to an avocado. The seed's cavity contains a refreshing liquid that, if harvested within six months, turns to a sweet, edible liquid. If left, however, this jelly turns into a hard, white substance similar to that of elephant tusks or animal teeth. Precious as these seeds are, at Pretty Pink Eco-Jewellery, our ecosystem comes first. That's why the first crop of fruit is left for the "curicas", the birds of the Amazon rainforest. Only after two years is the fruit collected by hand from the forest floor. Once collected, the seeds are removed from their husks and left to dry in the sun for about three months. Only then is Vegetable Ivory hard enough to be carved, sliced and drilled - much like real ivory - and capable of holding the colourful dyes that make our jewellery so unique. Unlike real ivory, however, Vegetable Ivory is a renewable resource that does not harm our animals or our planet when harvested.

Each individual piece of my jewelry is handmade with special care. As indicated in the item descriptions, I electroplate most pieces with 24 karat gold, reducing the likelihood of tarnishing. I work hard to ensure that every order that goes out from my home-based studio is perfect and unique. MY STORY: I started making jewelry when I was young and it's a hobby that I never outgrew. It wasn't until a few years ago, when a friend of mine demanded (in the most loving way possible) that I make her a pair of earrings, that I realized I have a product that others enjoy. It was that moment that my jewelry-making went from a hobby to a small business. I'm drawn to natural and neutral tones, minimalist style, matte metals and jewelry that is versatile enough to wear with everything from basic jeans and a t-shirt to that special outfit that makes you feel super fancy. I only make pieces that I love and would wear myself. I also try REALLY hard to keep my jewelry affordable. I know how much (or rather how little) I'm willing to spend on accessories and I try to price my items economically. I specialise in creating colourful, quirky, bold designs with an occasional dash of retro thrown in for good measure. My products are made to order by myself or with the help of other small businesses (laser cutting and UV printing, for example) and therefore my lead times reflect this. I’m also running the business around 2 very adventurous boys under 4 and sadly do not have access to childcare so this affects lead times also. I appreciate it’s not a quick turnaround however I promise it’ll be worth the wait!
