THE STORY OF FOODIN BEGINS In 2013, at the time Foodin as a brand was established, Lasse had his own online store focused on wellness products as well as several different ongoing projects in other companies of the same industry. Lasse developed his know-how by travelling the world whenever and wherever he could, going from small family farmers to grand international fairs and events in search of new ideas and partnerships. Maria Jalkanen, the second owner and entrepreneur of Foodin, stepped into the story in 2015. Meeting Maria was a chance for Lasse to take it down a notch and crystallise Foodin’s core mission. Having previous experience in the same field, Maria and Lasse shared a mutual passion and interest in developing Foodin onwards. By focusing on Foodin, both Lasse and Maria could influence matters that were important to them – ie the food production value chain from farmer to consumer – and conduct purposeful business. Lasse and Maria consider it most important to work from their hometown, Jyväskylä. Foodin’s production and warehouse currently employs well over 70 people, and with Foodin’s continual growth, the team will keep on growing. Lasse and Maria dream that one day their own children, Eemeli and Lilja, will continue Foodin’s story. Working together has given the couple a lot – and will keep on giving as the company grows.

Our story begins in 1975 at the heart of Helen Dean’s kitchen, in the small town of Huntly, North East Scotland. It was here that Helen first created her delicious traditional shortbread, and her friends and family loved the ‘melt in the mouth’ sensation. Her husband Bill, a Drum Major, thought it was so delicious he decided to use Helen’s baking to help raise funds for the local Huntly pipe band. Their touring helped spread her shortbread’s fame far and wide, and soon, the aroma of home baking would fill the town as Helen established her own small bakery to meet demand. Helen's light and crumbly shortbread was so popular that in 1992, we moved from a shop in the centre of the town, to a new purpose built bakery on the outskirts of Huntly. Our bakery looks much bigger but we have been at this bakery ever since and still baking Helen's melt in the mouth shortbread, just on a slightly bigger scale! We remain a family run business and we are incredibly proud of the fact we use time honoured handcrafted baking methods. Today we are recognised as ‘A Leading Premium Quality Scottish Shortbread’. Did you know? In one year, we use enough butter to butter 40 million slices of toast! We use around 650,000 kilos of wheat flour a year. That's enough to make around 1.2 million large loaves of bread or 65 million cupcakes! 8.8 million litres of milk is enough to fill 3 and a half Olympic swimming pools!

The Drinks Bakery creates award-winning savoury Drinks Biscuits that are expertly flavour profiled to match great drinks such as craft beer, fine wines, whisky and of course gin. They’re a premium, more thoughtful alternative to the usual crisps and nuts. The Founder Andy Murray developed them especially for discerning drinkers. Andy grew up in a food & drink obsessed family. His parents were pioneering the term ‘foodies’ before it was cool back in the 70’s & 80’s. They threw Andy & his sisters in the back of a VW camper van every summer and travelled around Europe for weeks at a time following their noses for great food & drink. He collected inspiration from amazing brasseries, markets and wineries across Europe. Andy has been baking since the age of 10, was a decent cook by 14 and wine qualified at 19. He’s a huge fan of craft drinks and independent craft brands and it was watching this sector explode from 2000 to 2015 that stirred his passion. He said of that time “I always thought the big snack brands would jump at the chance to bring the common snack closer to world of craft drinks but nothing happened.” In fact, not much at all had happened in the snack market for almost 30 years. Andy wanted a snack that was more thoughtful and discerning, like the ones his Mum used to make to match an aperitif. So, he began to think more deeply about the best flavours that would pair and balance with the great drinks in his cabinet and The Drinks Bakery was born.
