About Dalit Goods Co

Dalit Goods was launched in 2010 by the UK charity Life Association to raise both awareness and funds to support the Dalit community of India, often referred to as the "untouchables." The idea was born after a visit to Mumbai, where we noticed broken clay drinking pots scattered around the slums. For centuries, Dalit people have been forced to use these pots, which are smashed after use to reinforce their oppression and so-called untouchability. This powerful symbol of injustice became the inspiration behind Dalit Goods. Our mission is to design and supply ethically sourced, eco-friendly products while creating sustainable employment opportunities for Dalits across India. For over 25 years, Life Association has built schools and children’s homes for Dalit families, and every purchase supports this ongoing work. Our handmade clay pot candles are each named after a child cared for in one of our homes. Today, Dalit Goods offers a growing collection — from coconut oil-based soaps crafted in Kerala, to hand-painted home décor from Kashmir — all rooted in dignity, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility. By choosing Dalit Goods, you are not only embracing ethical, plastic-free products but also helping to transform lives and champion the rights of one of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Namaste

In 1995, in search of some adventure, founder Sam Brummitt flew to Kathmandu, Nepal with a round-the-world ticket. After an inspirational trek to Mount Everest base camp, followed by 6 months circumnavigating the Indian Subcontinent on re-conditioned ex Indian Army Enfield Bullets and sleeping under the stars at the side of the road, the idea for the business slowly developed. Fuelled by a conversation one day in Rajasthan with the owner of a small textile business and now lifelong friend and a key supplier, Ganpat suggested Sam came back home and started a business. Starting a business meant earning a living while putting something back into such a beautiful and wonderful part of the world and that’s exactly what happened. Namaste, translated as ‘I greet the spirit within you’ was founded in 1997. Our Passions - We are dedicated to sourcing beautiful fairly traded products from the far corners of the world, embracing traditional artisan skills. We are passionate about ensuring our products where possible are made from environmentally friendly, sustainable and recycled materials. Our other passion is you, our customers. Many of our customers have been with us since the early days and we hope you have enjoyed the journey with us so far. We have a great team and look forward to developing the business and continuing the Namaste journey as we bring you our latest inspirational collections.
