My creative world was turned upside down the day I discovered that my old guitar strings were a perfect medium for jewelry design. The realization that guitar strings could be re-purposed for jewelry ignited a spark. In a perfect melding of my love of music and passion for creating. High Strung Studios was born. Now celebrating 14 years, High Strung Studios continues to offer handcrafted guitar string jewelry with a unique design aesthetic as well as an ever expanding range of uncommon gifts for the Eco-conscious musician. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of High Strung jewelry is donated to Musicians on a Mission, a New Jersey based 501(c)3 non-profit organization which uses the power of music to raise awareness and funds for local charities. Swahili Coast is a North Carolina-based direct trade brand working in partnership with artisans in East Africa to handcraft sandals and accessories. All of our beadwork is done by our partner cooperative in Tanzania. The worker-owned cooperative operates on a model of total transparency, where all members of the co-op are part-owners of the business. We call this strategy "power over pity." The artisans we work with are our friends and partners, and it is a joy to work with them each day - tackling poverty with community-owned solutions. We focus on empowering our artisan partners rather than pitying them. Our partners are making a good wage and working hard to create a future for themselves and their families. My story begins growing up in Wyoming and Colorado. With family heritage from South Dakota, I spent hours watching my aunts bead and create beautiful works of art. Little by little, I learned to become a bead enthusiast myself, passed down from generations of memories and experiences along the way. I began making jewelry for my family and friends and thus the business began. Born having an indigenous ancestry, I naturally gravitated towards designing jewelry rich in Southwestern - Western color and detail. My greatest passion is in designing patterns and sequences with deep history and meaning. Old Indigenous patterns mixed in with current styles and the Old West bring me great joy and passion. My story as an artist began in 2010 when I followed the footsteps of my dad. He unrolled his napkin at a local restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI to discover the tines of his fork bent outwards. This sparked an idea in his mind to bend silverware and give it a new life. While I was in college, I joined him and together we refined the process to make smooth, consistent bends in silverware. After he grew out of the trade, I took over and continued in the same spirit of constant improvement in design and tooling. Everything you see in my store today stems from my philosophy of constant innovation. All of the tools that I use to bend silverware are developed in house. These tools allow me create smooth, complex bends with unmatched, sophisticated designs. Creating jewelry from recycled media ignited a passion for preserving our environment within me. All of my jewelry is 100% recycled and reused and stands as a symbol of environmental protection. I strive to create a purpose behind my art. To show people that we can produce wonderful things without damaging our planet. This drives me as an artist to produce to best silverware jewelry that I can.
