A small boutique pet shop on eclectic, artisan Granville Island, becomes home to Vancouver’s very first pet bakery. Located in “the Caboose” (an old train caboose, remnant from Granville Island’s industrial past), the bakery swiftly becomes part of the fabric of the Island’s community. Fast forward to 2011 when Stuart Scher purchases the bakery. With a new name, The Granville Island Pet Treatery, the bakery kicks off with an innovative new product: artisanal, hand crafted treats for the local Vancouver community - and for the many tourists that visit Granville Island every year. Stuart focuses on developing delicious recipes that combine much needed functionality with all natural, ingredients. As the products become more well known, Canadian and international visitors to the caboose express a desire to get the Pet Treatery products made available closer to their homes. Enter Salomon “Sal” Casseres as Stuart's co-business owner. The two pet lovers get to work distributing The Granville Island Pet Treatery range into hundreds of pet stores locally, as well as across Canada - and beyond.

Tilted Barn Pet Company is owned by Nicole and Kim who came to know each other in 2004 by working for the company, which at the time, was known as Farm Fresh Pet Foods. The company was started by Kim’s ranching cousins who wanted to make sure their hardworking cattle dogs were getting the best quality nutrition possible. Working with an animal nutritionist at the University of Saskatchewan, they created a line of pet treats and cooked dog food, using real, whole foods to provide all the nutrients needed by a dog. It is also very important that all ingredients come from as close to home as possible. Our top priority is to create pet products with thoughtfully chosen ingredients that are fresh, nutritional, functional, sustainable, and ethical. These are ingredients you know, can pronounce, and are grown on Canadian farms.

In 2001, I decided to combine my love for dogs with a simple recipe from my home oven to create The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. I started by giving peanut butter treats to friends and co-workers for their dogs. The response was amazing, so I decided to take space at an open-air farmers market in York, Pa. Keith and I were a little skeptical about setting up at 7:00 am on a Saturday to sell dog treats. However, the customers embraced our products. Slowly we added a few local markets and pet stores, but stayed focused on farmers markets and weekend festivals. After a short two-year stay in Pittsburgh, PA, we moved to Grand Rapids, MI. In 2004, I decided to exhibit at our first pet product industry tradeshow. It was the first time I saw what Lazy Dog could become, I realized this could be my career. Our stay in Grand Rapids was short. After only 18 months we had an opportunity to move closer to home and settled in Saratoga Springs, NY. For the third time in less than six years I set up my bakery - in the garage - and kept spreading the word about the benefits of wheat-free treats for dogs. Only one short year after relocating to Saratoga Springs, Keith and I decided to take a leap of faith and focus our combined efforts on Lazy Dog. Keith resigned his Corporate Sales position with Heinz Ketchup and joined me full time.
