Seeds to Sew International is a Fair Trade Nonprofit organization with the mission of improving the lives of women and girls in disadvantaged communities through education and job skills training. The goal of our programs is to help the participants to become self-sufficient. We empower them so that they are able to provide a better future for themselves and their families. Our patented re-usable Enkiteng Bags made by the women in our sewing program in rural Kenya are upcycled, eco-friendly and socially responsible fabric bags originally designed for wrapping presents. They can also be used as shoe bags, travel bags, as a decorative pillowcase and SEW much more! The simple design allows the seamstresses to learn how to sew rather quickly, while they earn a sustainable income. First, they use upcycled (donated) fabric and as they gain confidence, they make the gift wrapping bags and other items using the traditional Kitenge fabric sourced in Kenya. Other items include aprons, wrap-skirts, knapsacks, reusable shopping bags and other custom products on request. Also in rural Kenya – through our Enkisoma beading and Githomo crafting programs – women create beaded jewelry, handmade functional items as well as other crafts made of natural materials as a way to pay for the school fees of their daughters and orphaned girls living in their area, who would otherwise not be able to attend school. Seeds to Sew is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation and Green America
