In the spring of 2020, while the whole world took a beat, I left my house each afternoon with a macro lens clipped to my phone and put on what I call my "bug eyes." I was an explorer and my neighborhood a new frontier, because with my lens I put on new eyes to see a world I had walked by, around, over, and literally on for most of my life. Through my phone I saw the friendly, fuzzy pedipalps and curious eyes of jumping spiders, long probosces and clover feet of weevils, and the shuffling, side-step of leafhoppers. Even mosses, bark, lichen, leaves, buds, flowers: everything had character, so I started drawing them as characters, and soon they took on lives of their own on the page. I started Kestrop Studio in January 2022 to share these friendly creatures with others. My goal is to use them to open others' eyes to the wonders around them, even if they live in a city, and appreciate what might be seen as the "normal" creatures around them. I mostly work with digital illustration tools, and print most of my products in-studio. If there's something you'd like customized or changed in any way, let's chat! I'm happy to start a conversation.
