was a fairly new wife, an expecting mom and a recent graduate in Early Childhood/ Special Education. We had just moved to Washington state and I was a bit heavy hearted as I thought out my career choices. I loved teaching and being with children but I also longed to be at home with my baby. I knew if I decided to stay home there would be a drastic cut in our income which was a bit nerve racking considering we had just bought our first home and were going to be adding a little one soon. As this thought continued to creep in, my eyes became open to the entrepreneur world. Many ideas crossed my mind but one October day, just 2 months before our son was due, fate fell into our laps. My husband and I are quite the bargain shoppers so we generally know a deal when we see one. My husband happened to come across an ad on Craigslist selling a little under 2,000 brand new car seat/ nursing covers. Well long story, short, this was the answer I had been looking for. We went to check out the covers and I immediately fell in love! The designs were stylish, the material was so soft and I loved that they had multiple uses. It has taken money, hard-work and time but this company has allowed me to do what I so longed for. I am able to connect with mothers around the world, sell a product I'm passionate about, work from home, make money to support my family and best of all, be at home with my little guy! We were the first company to design, manufacture and distribute an infant car seat cover to mass market - the Cozy Cover. For 3 generations now, Cozy Cover has been the infant carrier cover of choice by millions of moms everywhere. As the Cozy Cover took off, we knew we had to keep developing functional and high quality products to make life easier for parents-on-the-go. The story began when Camilla and Gerhard set out on a journey at the end of 1980 to explore the South American continent from Mexico to Peru. They never arrived in Peru, as the breathtaking beauty of the Guatemalan highlands and the Maya fascination blew their budget and time frame completely beyond their budget. They stayed until the end of 1982, when they got to know the country and its people and gradually established a deep bond with the Guatemalan Indians. After returning to Germany in 1983, they founded a company in Berlin. Our local partners are artisans, small workshops, cooperatives and independent weavers and tailors. The principles of fair trade and sustainability are paramount at all stages of purchasing, production and sales. GIRASOL is known more internationally, above all for hand-woven baby wipes. This group of dyers, weavers and tailors developed exclusively for us by a specially developed group of dyers, weavers and tailors are produced in Guatemala. Our yarns and fabrics are regularly tested by independent laboratories. Our philosophy is based on the foundations of fair trade and sustainability. We recently started using recycled cotton for our fabrics. In 2009, GIRASOL developed a patented baby carrier, the MySol: ergonomic, adjustable and comfortable. Another option is our WrapMySol with its wrap-like straps.

Melissa Pruitt is a product designer, professional sewist, surface pattern designer, and the creator of Kinderpack. Along with her husband, Mark, she has maintained a cottage industry small family business for over 20 years in her hometown of Godfrey, Illinois. Kinderpack employs work-at-home sewists and staff, while running the on-site facility with several family member employees as well. Kinderpack has a truly innovative business model that easily caters to micro and independent shop owners, while having the ability to scale to fill large orders.
