Teranga Market is dedicated to ending the cycle of poverty one bookmark at a time, starting with a single family in Senegal, West Africa. In 2009, Katie and Anne-Marie became best friends during Katie's semester in Senegal. Years later, Katie created Teranga Market as a way to help her friend help herself by making handmade "bookish" items from traditional West African fabrics, including bookmarks, tote bags, and pencil and makeup cases. Katie sells these in the US along with her book, "Teranga: A Memoir of Belonging" that tells the story of Katie's 5 months in Senegal and how transformative the experience and friendship was for her. Together, they hope to encourage others to travel, to learn about different cultures and languages, and to always keep reading, writing, and learning.
