I also get packing materials from a local thrift store so they don't have to throw it away. The story of Messermeister, “messer” meaning knife and “meister” meaning master, begins with a man and his passion for premium German cutlery. Bernd Dressler was born in Germany and in his teens immigrated with his family to Australia. In 1967 he sought after bigger dreams in America and began his career as a salesperson in cutlery for a large German knife company. In 1981, having gained the necessary sales experience, Bernd decided to start his own venture in cutlery with the help of his wife, Debbie Dressler. Bernd sought to reconnect with his countrymen by collaborating with a 3rd generation knife making family in Solingen, Germany. His passion for premium cutlery led him to design and manufacture vintage, handcrafted, forged German cutlery. While studying the manufacturing craft from the German masters, he also learned from chefs that a need existed for more functional, better performing knives. Bernd’s innovations are the first bolsterless heel, the first truly cambered chef’s knife, and the sharpest polished edge angle. Sweet Thyme Design is a reflection of my passions and taste. I have married my love of vintage, simple living, the great outdoors, and writing into one heartfelt parcel of hand stamped vintage flatware. I believe in making items with meaning and heart. I make each piece with the intention of it becoming an instant heirloom to be enjoyed for generations to come. I specialize in mindfully designed, hand stamped vintage flatware to serve all of life's moments, no matter how simple or grand by creating intentionally crafted adornments for the home and body. Each piece is truly unique and special as it is specifically designed with you in mind. Each spoon, fork, and spreader is foraged and then stamped by my own two hands in my home studio located in Austin, TX. My tools of the trade include individual metal stamps, an anvil, hammer, and a good old fashioned wooden stump. I love that my creative process goes back centuries, hammering each impression one swing at a time, all while adding a modern twist to the story and journey of each piece. The initial orientation of my business was the application of traditional lapidary techniques and processes to non-jewelry "findings". I did not want to address the regular jewelry market and focused on being a crafter of men's gifts; primarily knives. The knife is man's oldest tool, and lapidary work is man's oldest craft. We have married the two together. My grandfather was a stone cutter from upper Bohemia where the logo of the Stoneworkers guild was called a "Wirtel". I proudly carry on that tradition.
