Melissa Allen is a human biologist and movement specialist based in San Diego, California. She is married to Lonnie, an aviation mechanic and outdoorsman. The idea for Kovr Sunscreen came after their puppy, Bodie, accidentally discovered skin cancer on the top of Lonnie's head. Bodie's obsession with licking Lonnie's head where he was beginning to go bald, caused them to take a notice. They discovered a small spot that looked like an ingrown hair. That lead them to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist for a closer look. The small spot turned out to be Basal Cell Carcinoma, and thank God, it was removed without ongoing effects. Lonnie's reason for not wearing sunscreen as he should, was that he didn't like the feeling of it on his skin. Upon looking closer at the sunscreens available on the market, Melissa discovered consumers had one of two choices. If they were natural, they were extremely thick on the skin. And if they were thinner, they were chemical sunscreens, which are extremely harmful for the environment and responsible for destroying coral reefs. That was the moment Melissa had the idea to create a mineral sunscreen for active people that move, that's all-natural, not tested on animals, biodegradable, and ocean friendly.
