In 1994 I purchased a soap making book and dove in. I was running an afterschool program for the Y so I had some time on my hands. There were a few failures at first, but soon I got really good at making soap and it felt amazing on my skin! But soap was quickly taking over our home so in 1995 I started selling it to parents. When they kept coming back for more I knew I was on to something. I loved my job but making soap was MUCH quieter! So I quit the Y to pursue soap making full time and the rest is history. Now 3 other family members & 3 friends have joined me. What a fantastic team! Our pure and natural products feature wild, native North American plants. 100% of our base oils are certified organic and we only use sustainable palm oil that doesn't harm the rainforest. Unearth Malee blossomed from my Thai-American background, which gave me the daily fortune of experiencing a wide variety of Asian cuisines, and using Eastern herbs infused in body care and wellness items. It is my labor of love and a wonderful outlet where I can do what I love and share the benefits of traditional Asian herbs, remedies, Eastern beauty rituals with everyone. Smells of cilantro, lemongrass, ginger, kaffir lime, coconut milk, galangal root, tamarind, and jasmine rice would permeate throughout the house. Growing up with Thai herbal balms made with chili pepper and camphor leaves, inspired me to formulate recipes using the ingredients that I grew up around. In the art of soapmaking, I have been fortunate to use it as a platform for raising awareness of the environmental and social consequences of the destruction of rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia to create palm oil plantations. Creating Palm Oil Free recipes has been from the start of Unearth Malee, a challenge, but forever eye opening to the devastation it causes on the habitats of rain forest animals like orangutans, who are on the edge of extinction. Everything about Unearth Malee stems from love...the love of creating with my hands, mind, and soul. Malee is my Thai name, and it means "flower." Our farm history began with horses. In fact, the dairy goats were bought initially to support the foals in case a mare had inadequate milk. We milked lots of milk from our two first goats. We froze the milk in case any baby animal in our neighborhood needed it, no one needed it. So then the problem become, what to do with the milk? I got my nerve up and tried my first batch of soap. When I felt how great my skin felt after the first shower I was hooked.
