I started The Rustic House with $500 for a used wax machine, recycled glass that was cleaned out with a turkey fryer, and a BIG dream. My weekdays after school were spent testing candle formulations for 2 years with different scent combinations. I learned the candle trade at 18 years old, but wanted to make my blend "the best" before officially starting The Rustic House in 2013. The weekends meant tearing down my work tables in 'production' (my garage), packaging/labeling, and finishing all the candles before the Sunday market started. I only had 3 tables and had to make it work. I kept my turkey fryer story a secret at the beginning, but kept the recycling going. I offered our customers $2 off for each container they brought back so I could get feedback, and that positive feedback was all it took for me to dream bigger. In 2015 I began to work with retailers nationwide. Our products are now available in all 50 states, including 185 Ace Hardwares, as well as a dozen countries internationally. Made in small-batches with high-quality ingredients, it is still the love and encouragement of our loyal customers for over 10 years that powers our success. It was back in the summer of '93 when I was first enlightened with the idea of making candles. My good buddy Hefe and I were hiking along the rugged shoreline of the Olympic Peninsula. On our first evening, as the final rays of sunshine dipped below the horizon, we breathed deep of the fresh ocean air and fixed our gazes upon the emerging stars. After several hours of philosophical banter on the meaning of life, my eyes settled on the most recognizable beacon in the northern sky, "The Big Dipper". Suddenly my future flashed before my eyes. I would use elements of nature, which I so respect, to create a natural source of light. Hand "dipped" beeswax candles. And so "Big Dipper" Wax Works was born. Like drones to their queen, we have served and remain dedicated to our values, and proudly continue to make the best all natural candles available.

Back in 2014, a single mother of four got the idea to manufacture soy candles while attending a local festival. After doing some research, she started what would become an incredible business with just a crock pot in her kitchen. Her multiple crock pot operation quickly turned into a garage warehouse and she was able to start hiring employees to help in her dream. She worked 24/7 to get her name out to local retailers and word started to spread country wide. Her creative mind never stopped working as she now has a full line of paint can candles, bath bombs, soaps, sugar scrubs, diffusers, and air fresheners to compliment her mason jar candles that she has become notorious for. With now over 50 fragrances and 8 products, Surf's Up Candle opened it's first retail store in June of 2017 and has grown to a 10,000 sq ft warehouse and 10 employees to ship to retailers worldwide. What separates Surf's Up Candle from other candle manufacturers is the passion and drive to create an all natural, handmade product that customers have come to trust and love.

One day, while burning a boring old candle, they decided to start their own candle company that was as funny and fabulous as they were. Thus, the Funny Flames Candle Co. was born. Tyler and Daniel spent countless hours perfecting their unique scents and perfecting their candle-making process. They decided to use eco-friendly coconut wax because they wanted to ensure that their products were both sustainable and giftable. Each candle was lovingly hand-poured, with careful attention paid to every detail. But what really set the Funny Flames Candle Co. apart was their commitment to humor and laughter. Each candle was named after a hilarious joke or pun, paired with the perfect matching scent. The duo believed that laughter was the best medicine and wanted to bring joy and humor to their customers' lives through their products. They made sure each candle came with a silly label or a witty quote to brighten up their customers' days. The packaging was just as fun, with bright colors and quirky illustrations that reflected the company's ethos.

We no longer work out of a 50 square foot kitchen but we still make & ship everything ourselves - now from our bright & happy warehouse near the lake. Ginger June was my paternal grandmother's name, she passed away in 2019 but we try each day to keep her creative, kind & loving nature alive through this small business. Over a decade ago, Scott and Lisa Coyer went on a quest to find a scented candle that burned cleanly and actually lasted. Needless to say, they decided to make their own and started in their own kitchen. Within a couple years, they moved the candle making out of their kitchen and into a brick + mortar storefront in downtown Midland, Michigan. They soon began filling the shelves of their own location along with other businesses throughout Michigan, the USA and even Internationally. With their staff, they handcraft sustainable products daily.
