The Wren Design story: Wendren, The Wren Design founder, found that working as a textile designer in the fashion industry was not nearly as creative a field as she had dreamt. Her belief that "Creativity happens when experiences are connected" was proven one day when she was driving behind a cement truck on the way to buy a pair of ballet shoes. She noticed the great branding of Pretoria Portland Cement (which is Africa's best-known cement brand and has an Elephant as its logo) and wondered if she could make a bag out of it. At the shoe factory, she saw how they made ballet shoes strong. These two experiences led to one idea: sewing strong paper. This unique process, sewing paper in a durable way, is innovative and patent-pending. The products created are simple, purpose-led design. So, she resigned from her "day job" and has never looked back. The Wren Design now employs a handful of staff and is making a positive difference in many lives, proudly one of South Africa's first companies to be a certified B-corp.
