About Paste

Denise Fiedler is a collage artist who lives and works in San Francisco. She brings craft and a graphic designer’s eye to her whimsical collage art, composing hand cut images with hand painted papers for her company, Paste. Denise says inspiration is everywhere in San Francisco. An ordinary walk is far from ordinary! Being surrounded by water is calming and reminds her to be fluid. The coolness and clarity of the blue sky goes on forever and is especially beautiful in contrast with the red-orange Golden Gate Bridge. The rich visual mix includes a renowned urban setting as well as historic buildings, wildflowers, and palm trees. Denise is charmed by serendipitous encounters with people, animals, flowers and plants, and that sense of charm finds its way into her cheerful and uplifting artwork, which conveys innocence and delight. Denise is inspired by nature, fashion and children’s books. She was very drawn to the 1960’s mod movement — an aspirational youth subculture that dressed smartly and beautifully in rebellion against austerity and banality. Her artistic influences include iconic 1960’s fashion designer Mary Quant; the paper cutouts of Matisse; the exquisite floral paper “mosaicks” of Mary Delany, an 18th century artist; and the textile designs of Josef Frank. Denise began collage work in 2009 after many years designing and manufacturing textile home and fashion accessories. Denise has partnered with USPS, Pottery Barn, TeNues Publishing and Benetton.
