Bassin and Brown is a British Accessory brand established in 2014. The founder Mel Bassin had previously worked at Liberty of London for 20 years. He started his career as a menswear department manager, later as an assistant buyer and then buyer for 20 satellite Liberty stores in both men’s and ladies’ fashion. He was later promoted to the role of men’s accessory buyer for the flagship Liberty store on Regent St, London, England Throughout his time as buyer at Liberty he worked with the fantastic array of Liberty fabrics and prints helping to produce seasonal, Liberty’s own label collections in both men’s and women’s fashion for the Liberty satellite stores between 1989 and 1996. Mel also helped to produce, coordinate and design the Liberty’s own men’s label ranges from the late 1980’s to 2000. The Bassin and Brown range was inspired by working in such a unique fabulous store with great fabrics and designs and also by the influence of many, many inspirational people. Mel’s philosophy for the Bassin and Brown brand is to source and develop colourful, eclectic, unusual men’s and unisex accessories from around the world - with just a touch of eccentricity.

On the biggest day of my life, my shirt was a big disappointment. That was me in front of my beautiful bride and all of our guests with a sloppy-looking dress shirt. Sadly, the brand new, freshly pressed shirt didn’t even make it until I said “I DO.” After seeing the rest of my wedding pictures, I knew I had to find a solution to a problem that had bothered me for years. I’m not an engineer, so I began with what I knew: Collar stays toreinforce the collar, and that clearly wasn't the problem... I needed something to reinforce the placket! I started experimenting with plastics around my house: a milk carton, mini-blinds and even zip-ties. I quickly moved on to test virtually every commercial plastic on the market, ruining over 100 shirts in the process. The pursuit of the world’s first and only universal “placket stay” wasn’t an easy task. It took nearly three years to perfect, but in late 2015, we had done it! In partnership with a leading, global plastics company, we developed a proprietary material that is lightweight, flexible, soft enough to be sewn through and able to handle the intense heat of the dry cleaning & laundering process. A story of friendship... We make beautiful wooden bow ties by hand. We use solid oak from local recycling or PEFC certified wood for our creations. The “central fasteners” clips are made of goatskin leather and are interchangeable according to your outfit. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. We'll get back to you during the day. We met more than 10 years ago. A true friendship, we have always been there for each other. Our friendship is sacred. It's the most valuable asset that Steven and I have. Our age difference brings us closer. Steven brings me the enmity of his youth, his knowledge of running a business, his “square” side in the administration, his technical skills in woodworking. I bring him my different vision of the world, my artistic approach to materials and my experience of life.

The mission of A Dapper Sandlapper has always been to provide fine, handcrafted bow ties and suit accessories unlike any others. Having worn bow ties for quite a while, I was growing tired of boring department store options and took to my sewing machine to remedy the situation. I began business in my home in Greenville, SC in October 2015 and maintained production there until moving into a studio space in July 2017. I strive to offer products that are classy, yet different, and sure to be a conversation starter!
