The year was 1999. To most, it seemed the barbering trade was breathing its last breath. Nevertheless, Layrite’s passionate founder, Donnie Hawley, was still in hot pursuit of perfecting his client’s haircuts. His technique was being hindered by the traditional petroleum-based products his patrons wore that wouldn’t rinse out. Never wanting to limit style, yet committed to an elevated standard of barbering; Donnie labored to find a solution. The end result was a water-soluble pomade formulated to “Hold Like Wax and Wash Out Like Gel." After one of Donnie's patrons commented that his pomade was the only product that made his hair lay right, a brand was born. Layrite Men's Grooming Products have been setting the benchmark of traditional barbering and men's grooming ever since. Often imitated but never replicated, our products have become the staple brand used by barbers seeking quality and authenticity the world over.

At BYRD, we draw a ton of inspiration from Californian culture and the surfing lifestyle of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Growing up in Newport Beach, surfing has always been a huge part of my life. And as a surfer, there’s nothing I know better than sun, salt and surf. Which also happen to be the three key ingredients for healthy hair and skin. That’s why we use them in our products. We come up with all of our product ideas here at the BYRD’s Nest in sunny Newport Beach, California. This is where we eat, sleep, surf and stay slick. Inspired by the gentleman surfer, we don't let our lifestyle get in the way; we let it pave the way.

Shiner Gold Pomade started with my need for the perfect Heavy Hold Pomade after many bad hair days and frustration trying to get my hair just right. I needed something that would tame my wild and unruly thick hair. I needed something that would go in heavy enough to help pull my waves out but still pliable enough to round out the perfect style. My journey of creating the perfect pomade began. Weeks turned into months which turned into years. After testing and retesting many formula variations I FINALLY struck gold. The Shiner Gold Heavy Hold was born! Soon after I launched Shiner Gold Pomade, I went back to the drawing board to attack more products. Today we have two pomade holds (Original Heavy Hold and Psycho Hold) along with an amazing Matte Clay, Sea Salt Spray, Texture powder, Shave Soap, Beard Balm, and Shampoo. In the early 2005 when, of all things, an article about the benefits of traditional wet shaving caught my eye. As a guy who worked in financial services, I was always on the lookout for disruptive technologies as a potential investment opportunity, so I was intrigued by the idea that there could exist of a way of shaving that was both less expensive and more effective than the typical mass-market approach. Granted, the fact this disruptive technology happened to be about a century old was unique, but further investigation was clearly required. I soon found that the benefits of traditional wet shaving far exceeded all of my initial expectations. Not only was it was less expensive and more effective (a most beautiful combination) than using the cartridge razors I had grown up with, but it also managed to transform the entire shaving experience from a chore to a pleasure. The awesome scents, combined with an invigorating cooling sensation, just brought the whole experience together for me in an especially satisfying way. However, it wasn't until I tried Alt-Innsbruck (a renowned Austrian aftershave), that I found exactly how good an aftershave could be. After several years of on and off tinkering, I eventually hit on a formulation that I immediately knew was too good not to share. I took on the moniker “Mr. Fine”, began selling Fine Classic After Shave on-line, and the rest was history almost exclusively via word of mouth the product experienced explosive growth.
