I started The Rustic House with $500 for a used wax machine, recycled glass that was cleaned out with a turkey fryer, and a BIG dream. My weekdays after school were spent testing candle formulations for 2 years with different scent combinations. I learned the candle trade at 18 years old, but wanted to make my blend "the best" before officially starting The Rustic House in 2013. The weekends meant tearing down my work tables in 'production' (my garage), packaging/labeling, and finishing all the candles before the Sunday market started. I only had 3 tables and had to make it work. I kept my turkey fryer story a secret at the beginning, but kept the recycling going. I offered our customers $2 off for each container they brought back so I could get feedback, and that positive feedback was all it took for me to dream bigger. In 2015 I began to work with retailers nationwide. Our products are now available in all 50 states, including 185 Ace Hardwares, as well as a dozen countries internationally. Made in small-batches with high-quality ingredients, it is still the love and encouragement of our loyal customers for over 10 years that powers our success. Back in 2014, a single mother of four got the idea to manufacture soy candles while attending a local festival. Over a decade ago, Scott and Lisa Coyer went on a quest to find a scented candle that burned cleanly and actually lasted. Needless to say, they decided to make their own and started in their own kitchen. Within a couple years, they moved the candle making out of their kitchen and into a brick + mortar storefront in downtown Midland, Michigan. They soon began filling the shelves of their own location along with other businesses throughout Michigan, the USA and even Internationally.
