Hi, I’m Katie, a potter based in Berkshire, UK. I launched Katie L Thompson Designs in 2015 and have slowly developed a range of handmade luxury ceramics. The focus of my ceramics practice is stoneware, thrown by hand on the potter’s wheel. All my pieces start by throwing a form on the pottery wheel. When the clay has dried to a leather hard stage, the piece is returned to the wheel and the base of the piece is refined in a process called trimming. It is left to dry thoroughly for 1-2 weeks before being loaded into the kiln for a bisque firing at 1,000 °C. Next glaze is poured into the interior and 3 coats of glaze are applied with a brush to the exterior. It then undergoes a second firing to 1,220 °C using a drop and hold firing. Each glaze recipe has been formulated from scratch and is unique to me, meaning you won't find these exact finishes and colours anywhere else.
