Designed and handmade by Eastern NC native Shelley Smith, OysterPaws was brought to life based on a desire to help local animal shelters. Beginning with a simple, yet timeless design, Shelley began hand-painting picture frames embellished with NC oysters and a touch of Southern. To make our products, we buy North Carolina oysters grown in local waters (supporting local commercial fishermen), consume them with family and friends, and choose which empty shells we want to use for our products. Unused shells are dropped at NC Oyster Shell Recycling Program locations. The chosen shells are cleaned and sanitized before providing them with an opportunity to shine. While oyster shells are tough they are not indestructible, so our final step is to coat each completed shell in a food safe epoxy resin for a brilliant shine and added protection. Since all of our oyster shells are made by Mother Nature please keep in mind that no two shells will be the same size or shape. All sizes are approximate. Keeping in line with supporting small business, a portion of all profits are donated to small local animal rescue groups located in eastern North Carolina.
