Trashy Bags Africa is a social enterprise company upcycling plastic waste that litters the streets of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, into eco-friendly bags. Over 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste is produced in Ghana annually leading to pollution of streets, beaches, and sewage systems. Plastic sachets, in particular, have become a big problem due to a lack of recycling initiatives and waste management infrastructure. Each month we collect over 200,000 pieces of plastic waste and 2,000 yards of waste fabric that are cleaned and upcycled by our Trashy Bags team creating fashionable, iconic, and useable products. Giving waste a value, promotes a "Trade Not Aid" approach. Job creation within the local economy is a key factor, and our venture now employs over 80 local Ghanaians, both directly and indirectly.
