Not only are local retailers and independent makers getting creative with how they run their business, but they’re also playing a critical role in keeping our communities safe and connected.
Today, that calling takes on even greater significance and urgency. Independent brands and local retailers have the opportunity to contribute in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by helping more people access cloth face masks.
At the beginning of April, health officials from the U.S. (CDC) and Canada (Public Health Agency of Canada) updated public health recommendations and advised all individuals over the age of two to begin wearing cloth face masks when out in public. Since this announcement, searches for face masks have increased by around 600%, becoming the most sought-after product on Faire.
Makers and retailers have an essential role to play
Our thousands of apparel and textiles brands on Faire are uniquely positioned to meet this demand for face masks, and get them distributed in communities across the country through local retailers. While many retailers and non-essentials businesses have had to close, many are offering curbside pick up and delivery options to help get necessities to their customers. Masks can be a relevant product offering when retailers reopen their storefronts as well. Together, we can make masks easily available while they are on backorder or hard to find elsewhere.
And, by making face masks widely available through this initiative, we lower the consumer demand for medical-grade masks, and ensure they are made available for the healthcare and essential workers who need them the most.
How makers can participate
We have created a resource page with detailed information and guidance on providing cloth face masks so that makers who want to join this cause can get started as soon as possible.
As of today, more than 60 makers are already featured in this collection and the number is growing, with more than 200 additional makers planning to begin producing masks. We believe we can distribute 100,000 face masks in the U.S. and Canada by the end of May!
