Over the past few years, Faire has expanded to nearly 20 countries, creating connections between retailers and brands around the world. Today, we’re excited to announce that Faire is now available to retailers in Australia, helping brands from around the world stock their products in Australian shops. We’re currently offering free shipping on Australian retailers’ first order with Australian brands. In addition, when you invite your Australian retailers to Faire using Faire Direct, they’ll get $100 AUD to spend on your line, plus free shipping for a year.

In the past year alone, we’ve added more than 1,000 independent Australian brands to Faire. Here, to celebrate launching Faire to retailers in Australia, we’re highlighting just a few of the exceptional Australian brands who make up our vibrant marketplace.

Lazybones

Lazybones is an eco-conscious clothing and homewares brand based in Byron Bay, Australia. Founded in 2000, the company’s love of the natural world and vintage style inspires its apparel, accessories, bedding, and homewares. Lazybones joined Faire in 2019, offering their range of products—from pillows and blankets to women’s dresses—to a global network of retailers. We spoke to CEO and Creative Director Tracey Hocking about selling wholesale and the small business community in Australia.

Faire: What’s the best part about owning your own business?

Tracey Hocking: I love being able to explore how to create a conscious purpose-driven business in these modern times, and being able to sculpt the business to suit my own quirks.

When did you decide to start selling wholesale?

We started as a wholesale-only company 22 years ago and opened a brick-and-mortar retail store about 4 years later. I didn’t have any experience in either wholesale or retail sales at the time, but I did have experience working at a B2B company in a different field. When starting Lazybones, it made sense to use that knowledge of selling directly to businesses.

I love working directly with retailers. It’s exciting to see the different ways people approach retail. There is so much deep thought and creativity that goes into each store.

What are you most looking forward to in 2022?

2022 has been very difficult in our part of the world. First, we had our first really large outbreak of Covid-19 followed by two devastating floods within a month. It’s impacted everyone locally and really driven home the need to address the urgent climate emergency.

Being an optimist by nature, I can see the need to make sure that our business is used as a vehicle for support within our community and also for a larger social change.

I’m excited to explore the notions of re-imagining business to have a focus on the greater good and giving back with a solid focus on sustainability in all aspects of our business life.

What makes being a part of the small business community in Australia unique?

Being such a small, isolated community means we have had to be very flexible, innovative, and supportive of each other to survive in such a small marketplace.

What excites you most about Faire expanding to retailers in Australia?

I’m looking forward to being able to reach more stores in Australia and to provide our existing customers with another way to order our products. We’ve been with Faire for two years or so and it has been a great experience so far. I’m excited to see how that translates to the Australian market.

Saardé

Verity and Shenol Kizek founded Saardé in 2019 after Verity was inspired by Turkish textiles and artisan-made pieces in Shenol’s hometown of Istanbul. Today, Saardé specialises in developing and designing home goods from artisan producers in Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, and India. Based in Sydney, Australia, the brand offers sustainable products ranging from homewares to their signature olive oil soap. We spoke with co-founder Verity Kizek about life as an independent business owner.

Faire: What’s the best part about owning your own business?

Verity Kizek: First and foremost it’s the freedom—the freedom to work hard, be creative and strategic, make my own decisions, and balance my family life. In addition, when we start with an idea, the team and I work really hard on it and learn a lot along the way. When all the work starts to come together and pay off, the sense of satisfaction is fantastic.

When did you decide to start selling wholesale?

We actually started out as a wholesale business. At the time it felt like the logical first step. Today we have a retail space and showroom in Sydney, and our products are stocked in Australia, the U.S., Singapore, and Europe.

What are you most looking forward to in 2022?

I’m so excited to be really working on our brand this year and expressing it through everything we do. It’s an exciting, creative, and rewarding process.

What excites you most about Faire expanding to retailers in Australia?

Faire provides an amazing and accessible platform to small businesses and will give small businesses in Australia a chance to grow, which is fantastic!

Melbourne-based stationery and lifestyle brand Emma Kate Co. was founded in 2015 by Emma Kate Codrington. The brand aims to inspire adventure and bring joy to people around the world through fresh designs. Today, Emma Kate Co. has over 400 wholesale partners and customers in over 60 countries, selling products like planners and notebooks, baby journals, and greeting cards. We spoke with founder Emma Kate Codrington about growing her own business and the local retail community in Melbourne.

Faire: What’s the best part about owning your own business?

Emma Kate: Surrounding myself with amazing people—the inspiring humans in our team I get to work alongside, the incredible stockists we partner with, and the customers who choose to support our small business. And, being able to follow the call of my creativity. Even seven years in it makes my heart skip a beat to see an idea in my mind turn into a tangible, beautiful product in my hands.

When did you decide to start selling wholesale?

I actually started with wholesale right from my brand’s launch. It felt like a really exciting way to be represented and have our products sitting on shelves in beautiful places, in the company of other beautiful homewares and lifestyle brands.

What’s your favourite local retail shop?

We have our own beautiful petite shopfront on the iconic Greville Street in Prahran, Melbourne, and I’m proud of the bespoke retail experience we’ve established in our own neighbourhood. My other favourite local is Morning Market because they offer all of my favourite things—fantastic coffee, fresh flowers, quality produce, and a lovely curation of gifts for the home and adventures.

What makes being a part of the small business community in Australia unique?

Everyone is so friendly and supportive of each others’ success. We’re also a really creative bunch down here. I love seeing the innovation and unique industry-leading designs that come from Australian brands.

Why are you excited for retailers in Australia to join Faire?

Faire is such a thoughtful curation of sellers. Australia is a big country, and it’s not always easy for retailers (or sellers) to travel to trade shows, so I think Faire will make both buying and selling so much more accessible to regional and remote communities, and to smaller and more independent brands.
