Welcome back to the Faire Fashion Index, our guide to the past month’s top sartorial searches to keep you up on today’s trends.
Summer has officially come and gone, and shoppers are embracing fall’s chill. While they’re on the lookout for cozy sweats to wear at home by the fire, they’re also gearing up for time outdoors. Think: trick-or-treating with the kids, raking leaves, long walks with the dogs, and happy hours huddled under a heat lamp. All these fun fall activities require transitional layers, like cardigans, quilted jackets, and shackets (shirt jackets, for the uninitiated).
Special shoutout to the top searches that have continued over from last month’s list: fall clothing and Halloween. These three have continued into October, so we’ve omitted them from this month’s Index in favor of what’s new.
Of course, as soon as the first leaf falls, many people start to look ahead—way ahead—to the holidays. While some are planning their Halloween costumes, others are jumping straight to Christmas, prepping for holiday parties, ugly-sweater season, and cute-sweater season too. We expect these searches to only get more popular as we make our way into next month.
But for now, let’s take a look at the data to see what’s hot while the weather cools down:
Top 10 trending searches:
- Jeans: From cropped flares to oversize boyfriend silhouettes.
- Christmas: Everything you need (to wear) for the holidays.
- Holiday sweaters for women: Some ugly, some not.
- Sweatshirts: Bundle up for the fall chill with crewnecks and hoodies.
- Cardigans: An essential layering piece for transitional months.
- Shackets: A throw-on-and-go staple for the fashionable set.
- Quilted jackets: An extra-warm layer for chillier days.
- Denim dresses: Casual, effortless, and endlessly chic.
- Game day: Custom jerseys, tees, and sweats to cheer on your favorite team.
- Leopard print: 0% neutral, 100% a wardrobe staple.
Most popular styles:
- Occasion Dresses: Retailers are starting to stock up on special-occasion dresses for the holiday season, and according to Vogue, this fall is all about luxurious textures. Think super-soft velvet, puff sleeves, embellishments, and bows. Find these silhouettes for adults at shops like Endless Blu and Blu Pepper, and party-ready ones for kids at Oopsie Daisy (hello, ruffle collars) and Adorable Sweetness.
- Leopard: “Animal prints are having a moment—NYFW just saw them on and off the runway—and leopard is leading the pack,” says InStyle. While we touched on leopard-printed denim last month, this trend blew up in a range of head-to-toe styles throughout September: In fact, retailer searches for leopard were up 150% year over year. Ready to go wild on this trend? Find your leopard jumpsuits and skirts at Aaron & Amber, leopard trousers at Rosa Clothing, and leopard sweaters from En Crème.
- Utility Jackets: Lighter than the shacket and known for its, well, utility, this coat will take you through transitional seasons in style. We love the airy utility jacket from Cubic that features asymmetrical pockets and an oversize silhouette. There’s also In Loom’s chore jacket that’s too cute for actual chore duty, thanks to a corduroy collar and gingham cuffs. Lily Clothing offers a wide variety of shackets, if you need to stock up on those too, whether you prefer patchwork plaid or different shades of denim.
- Cozy Knitwear: As the seasons change, everyone is looking to get more cozy. Maintain an elevated cozy look with the Nomi Vest from Mod Ref or All Row’s textured cropped sweaters. They bring coziness and style to the party. For something a bit more relaxed, look no further than Sweetkama sweats. There are matching sets, slouchy sweatshirts, and jumpsuits to keep everyone toasty and warm as the temps start to dip.
- Holiday Pajamas: Shoppers are already preparing for their holiday photos—that means it’s time to get out the matching PJ sets, slippers included. From Santa Claus and snowflake-printed sets at LA Society and embroidered, festive tops at Peach Love California to holiday-ready slippers at Rock Paper Scissors, there are a host of makers to help you stock the goods you need for the cheeriest of holiday seasons.
